HISTORY'S MOST MYSTERIOUS ACCESSORY: THE MORETTA MASK

What comes to mind when we hear the word “mask” today? We think of face masks, hair masks, lip masks—in other words, masks that are actually beauty products. When we think of different types of masks, models such as Salvador Dali's mask or the scream mask come to mind. But think of the masks at masked balls. In ancient times, these masks were widely used. Today, we will talk about the Moretta Mask, one of history's most mysterious accessories. If you're ready, let's get started.

HISTORY'S MOST MYSTERIOUS ACCESSORY: THE MORETTA MASK

The Moretta mask is a rather interesting and mysterious mask that women used to wear in Venice. Its name comes from French and means something like “little dark one.” It was usually velvet-covered, black, and oval-shaped. But the strangest thing that set this mask apart from others was that you couldn't speak while wearing it.

Why? Because there was a small button on the back of the mask, and the woman would hold it between her teeth to keep the mask in place on her face. Therefore, the woman wearing the mask couldn't open her mouth or speak. This gave her an air of both silence and mystery. At the time, such things were considered attractive and noble.

This mask was generally worn by noblewomen. It could be used at carnivals, monastery visits, or special invitations. It was perfect for women who wanted to hide their identity and look a little mysterious.

But over time—especially towards the end of the 18th century—women began to resent being forced into such silence. More women began to think, “Why shouldn't I speak?” and these masks gradually disappeared.

Today, the moretta mask is known primarily as a historical artifact specific to the Venice Carnival. Its appearance is still striking, but its use is now almost entirely symbolic.
