IMAGE OF TWO MERGING GALAXIES

These two galaxies are slowly merging. Between them, you can see a faint stream of stars being pulled by their mutual gravity - this also contributes to the irregular shape of the small galaxy. Located about 180 million light-years away, this pair is in the constellation Canes Venatici.

Image description:

The lower half of the image is filled with a large spiral galaxy with a bright white star bar in the centre. In the upper left, a smaller galaxy glows with bright blue stars. It has an irregular shape that looks almost like a vertical star bar. The rest of the image shows a black void interspersed with more distant galaxies and stars.
